While Blacks represent approximately 13% of the U.S. population, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the group accounts for 49% of the nation’s AIDS cases. In 2006, both Black men and women had the highest HIV death rates per 100,000 (ages 25-34 & 35-44). Also, HIV was the fourth leading cause of death for Black men and third leading cause of death for Black women (ages 25-44). Unfortunately, many of those who are infected with HIV are unaware of their status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others. It’s time to mobilize and talk about this devastating disease so we can make a difference… and there’s no better time than February 7th! On this commemorative day, Blacks are encouraged to get educated, get tested, get involved, and get treated around HIV/AIDS. Special events such as press conferences, town hall meetings, church services, community marches & rallies, candlelight vigils, and free HIV testing will be held throughout the nation.

Winnebago County Health Department Now Offers E-PAY
The Winnebago County Health Department announces customers now have the convenience to use E-PAY for selected services. E-PAY allows customers through their own computers to use Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit or debit cards to pay for permits, fees and birth/death certificates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“We wanted to provide our customers a more efficient and consumer-friendly option to apply for services along with an electronic on-line service for payments”, said Larry Swacina, Director of the Center for Environmental Health Improvement, Winnebago County Health Department.
The Winnebago County Health Department is offering additional H1N1 vaccination clinics for the community. The Department will be holding clinics for anyone who has not yet received their H1N1 immunization.
“Being vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 flu not only protects you, but it helps protect the people around you. If you get the flu you can pass it to others including babies, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions who are more likely to suffer serious complications.
As a result the CDC and the Health Department recommend that everyone possible receive their vaccination, even those who normally do not fall under the ‘high-risk’ categories,” said Mike Bacon, Public Health Administrator.
Appointments can be made for the clinics by calling 800-649-2381 at any time of day. The Winnebago County Health Department has available all forms of the vaccine, including the nasal spray, for distribution at the following clinics:
